EXCITING NEWS AT CHERRY VALLEY GOLF CLUB!

We at Cherry Valley want to update you on the progress of the restoration of the golf course.  We have contracted with Pavelec Brothers, who have constructed numerous golf courses throughout the East Coast, to:

        Rebuild 10 of our greens

Install drainage for the greens under #2 and #5

Install perimeter drains around another 12 of the greens

        Expand the #1 tee box

Install a new White Tee Box at #6

Renovate some of the sand traps

All new greens to receive creeping bent grass for putting surfaces

All 18 greens to receive Kentucky Blue Grass collars

Some of the golf courses worked on by the Pavelec Brothers include the Spring Lake Golf Club in Springlake N.J., the Riverton Country Club in Riverton N.J., the Rock Spring Club in West Orange, N.J., as well as the Ridge at Backbrook, a course of the National Golf Course Owners' Association, and Baltusrol Golf Club, Springfield, N.J., which hosted the U.S. Open on several occasions.

Patrick Campbell, C.G.S.C., has been retained as consultant to oversee the reconstruction of the course.  Pat has 35 years professional experience in golf course construction, reconstruction, and golf course management.  Courses he has been involved with over his tenure:

Panther Valley Golf & Country club, Allamuchy, N.J., (1991-2009)

This course hosted the State Amateur Golf Tournament in 1993 and 2003

       Suburban Golf Club, Union, N.J.

Basking Ridge Country Club, Basking Ridge, N.J.

Pat's father was Golf Course Superintendent at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J. for over 40 years, and his son Michael is the current Golf Course Superintendent at Rock Spring Club in West Orange, N.J. where the State Open Golf Championship was held.

Also returning for the 2010 Golf Season, at the request of many of our members, is Michael Percudani at the Superintendent Position.  Mike is a 2009 graduate of the esteemed Rutgers University Turfgrass Management Program.

He was at Jack Frost National Golf Course for the 2009 season.  Previously, Mike was here at Cherry Valley Golf Club for 7 years at various positions, and was our 2008 season Superintendent.

Cherry Valley Golf Club is looking forward to working with both Pat and Mike in the grow-in this fall, and in the upcoming 2010 Golf Season.

  COURSE CLOSED FOR THE SEASON

Due to extensive vandalism and problems with the greens, we are unfortunately closing the course early for the season.  We are closing now so we can repair and rebuild in order for us to be a better course for you by the 2010 Golf Season.

We want to thank you all for your support and hope to see you next year!

Tip of the Month

HOW TO PRACTICE LIKE A PRO

1)  Always Warm Up Completely:  Prepare your body to swing the club by using golf-specific stretching and by beginning to strike the ball using small swings.

2)  Practice In a Station:  Always set up an alignment station to support your practice.

3)  Train Mechanics With Short-to Mid-Irons:  When working on swing mechanics, begin with short irons and work up from thee.  Look to "own it" with the 9-iron first before moving to the 7-iron.

4)  Each Practice Session Should Include "Training to Play".:  At the end of each ball-striking session, play some imaginary holes on the practice facility; go through your full routine before each shot.  This puts the mechanics that you just trained to the test and makes it easier to transfer the new mechanics to the course.

5)  Each Practice Session Should Include the Short Game:  Make sure you set aside a significant portion of each practice session for some short game work.  This is the most direct route to improving your score, as two out of three shots during each round are struck from within 100 yards of the hole.
